How to Properly Ventilate Your Garage

Garages, like basements, can be difficult to properly ventilate. But neglecting to ventilate your garage can lead to foul odors and problems with mold and mildew. And if you tend to spend time working in your garage, then it could be very unpleasant without proper ventilation. If you park your car in your garage or store chemicals in there, then fumes can also build up and make the air slightly toxic inside your garage. With attached garages, these fumes could even seep into your home.

If you’re looking for ways to properly ventilate your garage, then read on for our top tips…

Windows

If there are windows in your garage or garage door, then opening these for at least a short period every day will help to get some fresh air flowing through your garage. If there are no windows, then you might want to install them in your garage door, but make sure you consider the factors in this article when making this decision.

Open the doors

If you don’t have windows to open, then opening the garage door will be the best way you can let fresh air in. Even better if your garage also has a side door – open both to let the air flow through. Make sure you only leave your garage door open if it is safe to do so, i.e. when you are there to keep an eye on it. Never leave your garage door open overnight.

Vents

If you don’t want to install windows, then adding vents is another great option. Installing vents in the roof of your garage or high up on the walls is preferable since warm air rises, allowing this warm air to escape out of the vents. Make sure vents are installed in a way that prevents rain from entering your garage. Turbine vents are an ideal solution as they effectively pull air out of your garage.

Fans

Fans can also help to draw air into and out of your garage. There are a variety of different types of fan you could use, including:

  • Ceiling fan
  • Window fan
  • Exhaust fan

Assess your garage space and your budget to determine which type of fan is best for you. Exhaust fans are particularly effective but some types are more costly and disruptive to install.
